Episode Transcript
Hello and welcome back to Grit and Grace! Today, we're going to talk about women in STEM - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Women have made significant contributions to these fields throughout history, but it's not always been easy. They have had to overcome barriers, discrimination, and stereotypes to make their mark. In this episode, we'll explore the stories of some incredible women who have broken barriers and made a lasting impact on the world of STEM.
Let's start with Ada Lovelace. She's known as the world's first computer programmer, and this was back in the 19th century! Lovelace had a deep interest in mathematics, and when she was introduced to the analytical engine, a precursor to the modern computer, she saw its potential beyond simple calculations. Lovelace wrote the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine, and this became the basis for modern computer programming.
Another woman who broke barriers in STEM is Chien-Shiung Wu, a Chinese-American physicist. She's known as the "First Lady of Physics" for her groundbreaking work in nuclear physics. Wu disproved a widely accepted theory that suggested that nature didn't distinguish between left and right in a nuclear reaction. Her experiment showed that this wasn't the case, and it changed the way physicists viewed the universe.
Moving on to the present day, women still face challenges in STEM fields. According to a report by the National Science Foundation, women make up only 28% of the workforce in science and engineering. There's a lot of work to be done to make STEM fields more inclusive and diverse. But the good news is that there are many organizations and initiatives that are working towards this goal.
Did you know that in 2015, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Youyou Tu, the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize in medicine? Tu discovered a treatment for malaria based on traditional Chinese medicine, and this has saved millions of lives around the world.
So, what can we do to encourage more women to pursue STEM careers? One of the most important things is to provide role models and mentors for young girls. When they see women who have succeeded in STEM, it inspires them and shows them that they can do it too. We also need to make sure that there are no barriers to entry for women in these fields, and that they have the support they need to thrive.
That's all for today's episode of Grit and Grace. Thank you for listening, and don't forget to tune in next week for more inspiring stories.
